| | Title: The Christus Victor Atonement Motif Applied to Evangelism among Folk Buddhists in Mainland Southeast Asia Author: Newhouse, Thomas Description: The thesis of this paper is that the ancient Christus Victor atonement motif is more relevant to the worldview of folk Buddhists in mainland South East Asia than the penal substitution view of the atonement. Many modern evangelistic presentations are based almost entirely on a penal substitution view of the atonement. Often these gospel presentations are also used in a mainland South East Asian folk Buddhist context. Folk Buddhists in mainland South East Asia incorporate many animistic beliefs in their worldview. The Christus Victor atonement motif emphasizes that Christ’s death on the cross and subsequent resurrection resulted in victory over Satan and the demonic powers. Evangelistic presentations which have a more holistic view of the atonement that include the Christus Victor motif would be more relevant to the worldview of folk Buddhist in mainland South East Asia.
