| | Title: A PROLEGOMENA FOR THE THAI CONTEXT: A Starting Point for Thai Theology (Article) Author: Taylor, Steve Description: The article explores the statement why "Thai are not interested in systematic theology’. The reason is most theology taught in Thailand is Western in origin. The problem is that the thought processes and epistemology of the Thai have generally not developed along Western lines. They hold different presuppositions and world view to that of the West. Furthermore, ‘local theologies which are directly applicable to the Thai mind and culture have not yet emerged’. The gospel of Jesus Christ can not yet be said to have become rooted in the Thai mind. This article discusses the necessity for develop of a Thai systematic theology. | | Title: Illustrating the Gospel from Thai History Author: Dahlfred, Karl Description: Because the concept of substitution is largely absent from Buddhist thinking, there are a couple of illustrations from Thai history that I will often use to explain to people how Jesus could die on the cross, not for his own sin (which he didnʼt have) but in order to save others. I take no credit discovering or coming up with either example, but I have found them useful and hope that anyone else doing evangelism among Buddhists, particularly Thai Buddhists, might find them useful. | | Title: The Missionary As Stranger: Phenomenological Analysis of Christian Missionaries' Encounter with the Folk Religions of Thailand Author: Cohen, Erik Description: Two major dimensions of strangeness, the cognitive and the normative, are distinguished in Schuetz’s classical phenomenological model of transition from strangeness to familiarity. It is argued that there is a category of stranger whose roles and obligations encourage a cognitive, but preclude a normative transition from strangeness to familiarity. The argument is examined on empirical data on Christian missionaries in Thailand. Specifically, the changing attitudes to local beliefs in spirits (phii) and their accommodation into the missionaries’ worldview are examined. It is found that the missionaries tend to ‘Christianize’ the spirits, thus modifying their worldview, but not changing it fundamentally.
